LANDSCAPES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE A MAMMALThe most lively and beautiful landscapes are a little out of control. They have texture, life, and cultivate relationships with the non-human world. Unfortunately, a lot of our environment is paved over, smoothed out, and flattened. In reponse to this, we create places that are lively, imperfect, restorative, unpredictable, comfortable, and not exactly what you want it to be because you cannot control other life forms. Our landscape designs hopefully make you feel more like a creature, part of a much larger ecology beyond ourselves.

RESTORATION, BUT MAKE IT FASHIONNo part of the planet is untouched by humans. No site, property, yard, or field is a blank slate. There is something already there - a patch of asters, an old oak, some nice bricks - to kickstart the healing process that landscapes can be. We focus on using native species, creatively reusing materials already on site, and designing environments for low input. 

But how do we ‘make it fashion’, you ask?

Landscape architecture interacts with so many different disciplines. We work with and learn from restoration ecology, horticulture, garden traditions, industrial design, and many others in between, and weave together the ripest parts into uncharted aesthetic territory for the Pacific Northwest.

PUTTING BOULDERS AND PLANTS IN YOUR YARDThe bread and butter of landscapes and gardens are simple materials - plants, soil, rocks, and timber. It usually doesn’t need to be more complicated than that. Computers are cool sometimes, but we don’t want landscapes to feel like they came out of one.

CHRIS COPELAND
Landscape Designer

Chris’s work in landscape architecture sprouted from his art practice, where he uses sculpture and drawing to explore how ecological and industrial systems blur the boundaries of nature and culture. He loves bread, ants, bicycles, and making things. He has a Bachelor of Fine Art from the Carnegie Mellon School of Art and a Masters of Landscape Architecture from the University of Washington College of Built Environments.JONATHAN HALLET

Gardens? Well sure they’re fun to visit, but I will never have the British spirit to work hard on tending my garden. Traditional styles of landscape design in the Pacific Northwest set us up for so much maintenance.

But gardens can also do so much more. They can be an oasis outside the chaotic home and away from Zoom; a place for our kids to be in nature; and habitat for birds and creatures. All while looking good. 

I’ve worked in horticulture and landscape design for over 15 years. I studied landscape architecture at UC Berkeley and worked at Lutsko Associates, and have designed both NDA-flavor estates and cozy home gardens.
